The Italian-born wife and daughter-in-law of Former Indian Prime Ministers, Sonia Gandhi joined the Congress Party in 1997. Sonia had led the Congress Party to an impressive win

On PM Manmohan Singh: "The handling of 26/11 Mumbai attack and crisis in Pakistan proved that Prime Minister has provided the nation with a strong leadership".
On Third Front: "It is easy to form a front but has anybody opened a front against poverty, unemployment, communalism and terrorism like the Congress did?"
On Telangana statehood: "No objection to formation of a separate Telangana state and will take up this issue on priority. Congress took up several irrigation projects and set up an IIT in Telangana."

Sonia Gandhi had made it clear that Dr Manmohan Singh would be Congress' PM candidate. She also indiated that Rahul Gandhi could assume 'leadership' when she said 'wait and see'.
